El Paso business loses everything in fire just ahead of holiday season

A local business in downtown El Paso preparing for the holiday season was disrupted by a fire overnight.

According to the El Paso Fire Department, they received a call about a fire in the alley near 511 S Stanton Street in downtown around 8pm on Sunday.

Co-owner Jenny Chong said she was not called about the fire and when she opened the store on Monday morning, her warehouse was found burned.

According to Chong, the store was preparing for the holiday season and now everything is a total loss, he added.

“You can’t sell it because it smells of smoke and they also spray water, so everything is wet and it smells of smoke, you can’t sell it,” Chong said.

Chong stated that he was in the process of establishing a new insurance company to protect the goods, but did not have any coverage in case of fire.

The El Paso Fire Department cut power lines at the store, according to Chong.

He added that this was done to prevent the fire from spreading.

Chong, whose “Grace Trading” store opened without power on Monday, said El Paso Electric won’t be able to reconnect it until it demolishes what’s left of the warehouse.

Chong said crews at El Paso Electric informed him it was because the shed had not been built to code.

According to Chong, he now needs to hire a new electrician and someone to demolish the shed.

El Paso Electric gave the following information about the fire:

The residential or business owner is responsible for all electrical work performed on his or her building(s), and these works must be carried out by a licensed and insured electrician. They are also responsible for obtaining necessary permits and arranging for necessary inspections from appropriate parties such as the City of El Paso or Dona Ana County and, in some cases, El Paso Electric. EPE will inspect any new connections from our transformers to the customer’s meter due to electrical upgrades and safety concerns. Beyond that, it is the responsibility of the owner.

The El Paso Fire Department told KFOX14/CBS4 the fire is under investigation.
