Kona couple arrested after double stabbing outside bar

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii Island police arrested and charged a couple following a stabbing outside a Kona speakeasy Saturday night.

Police reported that two people were injured in the knife attack. One is in serious condition.

According to Hawaii Island police, officers responded to a reported dispute at a bar on Sarona Road in Kailua-Kona around 11:30 p.m.

Police said a 41-year-old male security guard working outside the bar denied entry to a customer later identified as 40-year-old Joshua Van Why because the bar was at maximum capacity.

The verbal argument between the two later turned physical.

Van Why allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times with a switchblade, then fled the scene on foot.

Van Why’s girlfriend, Rachel Hogan, 29, is also accused of stabbing a second victim, 55, who tried to intervene, police said. He remains in hospital in serious condition.

On Sunday morning, police arrested Van Why and Hogan as they left their home.

Detectives also executed a search warrant at the couple’s home and seized a total of 26 knives as evidence.

They later determined that Van Why and Hogan were involved in a separate stabbing that occurred on March 25 at a beach park in Kailua-Kona.

Van Why was charged with first- and second-degree assault. His bail was set at $15,000.

Hogan, meanwhile, was charged with first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $25,150.
