Roy Haynes, Legendary Jazz Drummer, Dies at 99

Roy Haynes, a prolific jazz drummer with a career spanning seven decades, has died at the age of 99.

Haynes’ daughter Leslie Haynes-Gilmore confirmed New York Times said the drummer passed away on Tuesday, November 12, in Nassau County, NY, after a brief illness. Representatives for Haynes have not yet responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Born in March 1925 to immigrant parents, Haynes grew up in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood. He began his musical career as a teenager in the 1940s, performing in Boston nightclubs and working with Sabby Lewis, Pete Brown, Frankie Newton, and Felix Barbozza.

(In 1945 he moved to New York and became a full-time professional drummer and worked in Luis Russell’s bandPercussion Arts Ensemble. During this time he collaborated with saxophonist Lester Young and played in Charlie Parker’s quintet from 1949 to 1952. The following year, he began working with singer Sarah Vaughan, a working relationship that lasted until 1958. Later, Thelonious Monk collaborated with Eric. Dolphy, Lennie Tristano and Stan Getz.

In the late 1960s, Haynes worked with vibraphonist Gary Burton and started the jazz-rock project Hip Ensemble. He released an album called In 1971. Hip Society. In later years, Haynes collaborated with Chick Corea throughout the 1970s and 1980s and worked with Pat Metheny in the 1980s and 1990s.

Haynes won two Grammy Awards during his career: Best jazz instrumental performance for the group in 1989. Blues for Coltrane – Tribute to John Coltrane and best jazz instrumental performance, individual or group, in 2000 like minds. He also earned the nickname “Snap Crackle” due to his style of play.

In 1996, Haynes won the French Chevalier des l’Ordres Artes et des Lettres, and two years later in September 1998, Haynes, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, and Louis Bellson received American Drummers Achievement Awards from the Zildjian company.

Haynes releases his latest album Roy-Alty In 2011.

Accordingly New York Times, Haynes is survived by his daughter, sons, drummer Craig and cornetist Graham, as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
