The 200-year-old British media giant stopped posting on X. Here’s why

Social media is a different universe with its own political climate. On good days it gets warm, on bad days it gets ugly. On Wednesday, British newspaper The Guardian blamed X’s toxicity and decided to stop using the platform. While the 200-year-old media giant had been considering leaving X for a long time, the discourse that emerged on the social media platform during the US presidential election was the last straw. The Guardian has now announced that he has left X and his username has been archived.

The Guardian is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as Manchester Guardian and changed its name in 1959 and moved to London.

In a note, the Guardian accused X boss Elon Musk of spearheading toxicity on the platform. He played a key role in Donald Trump’s re-election and Musk will be part of his DOGE.

After the US elections media giant accepts call to leave X after the negatives outweighed the positives, he said.

“We think the benefits of being at X now outweigh the negatives and resources could be better used to support our journalism elsewhere,” the Guardian wrote in an article published on November 13. he said.

He noted “how offensive content is promoted on X.”

“The US presidential election campaign has only served to underscore what we have long thought: that X is a toxic media platform,” the Guardian article reads.

This wasn’t just because of X users. The British newspaper said Elon Musk used the platform to shape political discourse.

From now on, official Guardian accounts with more than 30 and 20 million followers will not publish news on X, but their reporters will use it to gather news.

The report even stated how much far-right propaganda was made on X.

However, he stated that he would no longer use the British newspaper’s platform, whose “role in promoting our work has diminished”.

The last article the Guardian published on X was about tropical birdwatching.

During the US election, the British newspaper wrote several articles questioning Musk’s role in the Trump campaign and future government.

He also criticized Democrats and Kamala Harris for not offering Americans a strong alternative. He also called Trump’s victory, with support from Joe Rogan and other podcasters, a victory for the anti-vaccine movement.

The UK newspaper is concerned about Trump’s win and Musk’s role in it, but thinks it could do without X and its algorithm supporting a particular view under Musk.
