At 9:30 a.m., the 119th Congressional conference will elect a new leader, Republican whip, conference chair, Republican policy committee chair, conference vice chair, and chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRS).

Competing for the coveted leadership role are Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R.S.D. and Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas and Rick Scott, R-Fla.

On Tuesday, 42 GOP senators voted against Sen. R-Utah. Leaders gathered for a candidate forum led by Mike Lee. Many of the lawmakers expressed satisfaction with how the debate was going, and Scott ended the night by adding two additional endorsements.

Republicans discussed a range of issues, some procedural, some substantive and some policy-oriented, according to Lee.

President-elect Donald Trump specifically did not support the leadership race in the Senate. But Scott’s race ended with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and has won the support of high-profile Trump allies like X owner Elon Musk.

Senate Republican conference Chairman John Barrasso, R-Wyo., is running unopposed for the whip, while Sen. James Lankford is running unopposed for conference vice president. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R.W.Va., is running unopposed in her bid for chair of the Republican policy committee, and Sen. Tim Scott, R.S.C., is running unopposed for the NRSC chair.

Sens. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, and Tom Cotton, R-Ark., will face off for the GOP’s No. 3 conference chairman role.

On Wednesday morning, the elections will be held in the old Senate chamber in the Capitol. Before each race, each candidate will receive two nomination speeches from other senators. They will then file their own lawsuit. There may be some debate before senators vote, and the secret ballot will remain secret unless individual senators decide to reveal who they have chosen. Even then there is no way to verify.

Elections can last for hours; The 2022 election was set to last until 1 p.m. after Scott challenged McConnell in the leadership race.

To be elected, a candidate must receive a majority vote in the 53-member conference. This means they need to get 27 votes.

Senators will not assume the new roles until the new Congress begins in January.
