Route 22 hotel and restaurant development proposal in Bridgewater returns to planning board

BRIDGE WATER – A proposal approved in 2018 would build two extended-stay hotels, three restaurants and a medical office but were never built, returning to the County Planning Board in December with plans to downsize one of the hotels.

RI Heritage Inn in Bridgewater will submit a proposal to rename one of the hotels, the Marriott Residence Inn, as a Woodspring Suites hotel, according to documents filed with the county.

Woodspring will have 122 rooms, compared to 127 rooms at Marriott.

No changes are proposed for the other hotel, Springhill Suites, and other buildings in the project called Bridgewater Center.

The two hotels will be built back from the highway, and Woodspring Suites will be located behind the 12.97 acres bordering the Chelsea Village community.

The development is planned on eastbound Route 22 between Adamsville Road and Morgan Lane, just west of where Stone Tavern replaced Houlihan’s, and proposes a Starbucks drive-thru.

The next county Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing on the Starbucks proposal is scheduled for Jan. 14.

At a recent Starbucks hearing, board members expressed concerns about traffic flow at the site and the potential impact of traffic on Route 22 at the Interstate 287 interchange.

In addition to the two hotels, Bridgewater Center plans call for three more buildings fronting the lot that fronts the highway.

There will be 7,000 square meters of restaurant area in one building, 6,000 square meters of restaurant area and 8,000 square meters of health offices in the second building, and 5,000 square meters of restaurant area and 3,000 square meters of health offices in the third building.

Woodspring Suites, originally called Value Place, was sold to Comfort Hotels in 2018.

The Route 22 property was the site of the Days Inn, which was demolished in 2018.

In August 2018, the property was sold to RI Heritage Inn LLC in Fargo, North Dakota, for $9.5 million. The company shares the same address with Tharaldson Hospitality Management, which owns and operates hotels in the United States.

Tharaldson Hospitality Management is owned by Gary Tharaldson, who Forbes magazine lists as the richest man in North Dakota with an estimated fortune of $1.2 billion.
