A doctor was stabbed by a patient’s son at a government hospital in Chennai on Wednesday, police said. Doctor Dr Balaji suffered seven stab wounds in the attack and is currently receiving treatment.

Officials added that accused Vignesh, a resident of Chennai whose mother was hospitalized, was arrested.

The incident took place in the cancer ward of Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, where Dr Balaji was working, when Vignesh attacked him with a knife.

Vignesh tried to escape after the attack but was caught and handed over to the police.

Expressing that they were “shocked” by the incident, Tamil Nadu Prime Minister MK Stalin said that he ordered the injured doctor to receive the necessary treatment and a detailed investigation into the incident.

“It is shocking that Dr. Balaji, who works at Guindy Kalaignar Centenary Super Specialty Hospital, was stabbed by a family member of a patient. The person involved in this incident was immediately arrested. I have directed that all necessary medical treatment be given.” “I have requested that it be forwarded to Dr Balaji and a detailed investigation be conducted into the matter,” he said.

State Health Minister Ma Subramanian also promised quick action on the issue. “Two people have been arrested and the police will immediately take necessary steps to arrest the others involved,” the minister said.
