Tory frontbencher says ‘impossible’ assisted dying bill ‘tight enough’

Sophy Ridge now turns to the debate on assisted dying, in which the Conservative MP took part Danny Kruger.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was published on Monday, revealing that medication to end a patient’s life will have to be self-administered, with doctors not being allowed to do so.

The law also stipulates that people must be terminally ill and be expected to die within six months, and states that death applications will only be allowed after being signed by two independent doctors and a Supreme Court judge.

Mr Kruger opposes the proposals.

He says: “I’m afraid that even under present circumstances the law is not strict enough, it is impossible for it to be strict enough.

“I’m also concerned about the principle that we’ve established, that if we pass this bill we’re effectively saying, ‘Yes, some people are better off dead, and doctors and judges should have the power to determine who those people are.’

“I think this sends a terrible signal to the frail, the disabled and those with mental health issues.”

‘Top quality palliative care’ should be the focus

Mr Kruger says he is “open” to additional safeguards but believes it is currently “impossible to have a secure bill”.

He adds that if the UK had “top quality palliative care” for everyone, no one would need the option of assisted dying.

The shadow minister also questions the validity of “personal stories” of people who “died badly”.
