Call for candidates for the Isle of Man Legislative Council

The timeline for the process was announced by the Speaker of the House of Keys on Tuesday.

The deadline for applications is 12:00 on January 9, which will be followed by a candidates’ conference that will allow applicants to meet with MHKs.

To qualify for the election, prospective MLCs must find a bidder, deputy and at least two other supporters from the House of Keys by February 13.

A vote will then be held for everyone who is successful on February 24, before a vote the following week.

Successful candidates will receive four of the 11 seats on the council, which consists of the eight MLCs elected by the MLCs, as well as the President of Tynwald, the Attorney General and the Bishop of Sodor and Man.

Upper house elections are held every two years in four-seat tranches, and those elected serve a four-year term.

In addition to serving as the revision chamber for proposed new laws, members of the Legislative Council participate in Tynwald debates and serve in government departments.

Juan Watterson SHK said the revised procedure for the final selection “should look and feel like a traditional recruitment process” but would still “ensure that applicants are subject to the necessary public and political scrutiny prior to selection.”
