A senior Amsterdam police officer warned on Tuesday that the city was hearing calls for unrest similar to those heard last week when a group of Palestinian protesters attacked Israeli fans outside a football match.

Halsema, Amsterdam’s police chief and the city’s chief prosecutor, also released a report on Monday revealing that events in Amsterdam last week were instigated by supporters of both sides of the war in Gaza.

Officials said there were social media posts threatening Israeli fans the day before the match. Additionally, Israeli fans tore down the Palestinian flag that night and many beat the taxi driver. In response, taxi drivers tried to unite online and target a casino where 400 Israeli fans were present, but police managed to avoid a major confrontation.

Following the match, Israeli protesters were seen “running around with sticks and destroying things,” according to the report. But pro-Palestinian protesters also “moved in small groups on foot, scooter or car, quickly attacking (Israeli) fans before disappearing,” according to the City Hall timeline.

Police said there has been a tense atmosphere in the city since the attacks. A total of eight people, aged between 16 and 37, were detained due to the violent incidents last week.
