Authorities say an elderly woman died after her car got stuck in the woods and caught fire in Sandwich.

An elderly woman whose remains were found inside a car in Sandwich on Monday died when her car went into the woods and burst into flames, authorities said.

Susan Lauber, 86, of Sandwich, drove before dawn to the last cabin on Peter’s Pond, District Attorney Robert J. Galibois said Tuesday.

The car left the asphalt road, went around the cabin, into the woods, and stopped there. According to the statement, the vehicle was leaning towards the passenger side “due to the slope of the forested terrain.”

Authorities said that the fire that broke out later engulfed the entire car.

Police then called 911 and responded to the area of ​​Quaker Meeting House Road, authorities said.

Human remains, later determined to be Lauber’s, were found inside the burned car, authorities said.
