Investigators reveal cause of explosion on W. Franklin Street

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – One person is being treated for burns following an explosion on Franklin Street in Evansville.

That’s according to the Evansville Police Department, which says the incident happened Tuesday afternoon at the Heritage Petroleum building.

Police said an oil truck parked inside the store exploded.

Investigators said the explosion occurred when an employee removed the fuel tank from the truck, and sparks from the torch ignited the fuel on the ground.

It was said that the worker was hospitalized.

EPD officers say the severity of his injuries is unknown.

Officials at the scene said that the fire was under control and there was no danger to the public.

Many people we spoke to in the area said they heard and felt the explosion just minutes after the fire alarm went off.

Investigators reported that the investigation into the explosion was completed.

We have multiple reporters on the scene and are working to learn more.
