Man accused of trying to run over group with his truck after Mankato bar fight

A. Minnesota The man is accused of trying to run over a group of people with his truck after a fight broke out at a bar in Mankato over the weekend.

What do we know?

Mankato police responded to the incident on East Walnut Street near South Front Street shortly after 1 a.m. on Nov. 1.

Police said witnesses reported a man in a GMC truck tried to run over a group of people.

How did it start?

Witnesses told police that the suspect, Jared Cartwright, 41, of Huntley, was involved in an altercation at a bar before the truck incident.

An eyewitness said Cartwright slapped him and he was kicked out of the bar. But when the victim and his friends left the bar, they said Cartwright was waiting for them in his truck.

Police said outside the bar, Cartwright started another verbal argument that escalated into a fight.

Witnesses said Cartwright eventually got back into his truck and then came “lighting up” on the group, driving through a flower bed and onto the sidewalk toward the six victims. One of the victims hid behind a pillar. It looks like the rest managed to get out of the way.

Police said security camera footage showed the truck running towards the group on the sidewalk and then suddenly stopping.

What did he say?

Shortly after the incident, Cartwright was pulled over in his truck. Police who spoke with Cartwright said Cartwright admitted to getting into an altercation with “some young college students,” as stated in the charges, but denied trying to run anyone over.

However, during the interview, police noticed that Cartwright appeared drunk. Cartwright allegedly admitted to drinking four whiskeys at the bar.

The charges state that Cartwright’s blood alcohol content was 0.135 on a breath test.

What’s next?

Cartwright was charged Monday with multiple felonies, including assault with a dangerous weapon and driving while intoxicated.
