Ryan Borgwardt, 44 years old, married and father of three children. WBAYHe went missing Aug. 12 after skiing on Green Lake, a scenic inland lake about 100 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Local authorities found that Borgwardt’s canoe had overturned the same day, with his life jacket on.

Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said the extensive search for Borgwardt’s body, which included underwater drones, towable submersible sonar, divers and three K-9 cadaver teams, took about 54 days but “there was nothing we could find.” Press conference on Friday.

In a shocking turn of events, Podoll said further investigation revealed it was likely Borgwardt. staged his disappearance and fled to Europe. Reuniting with his team on October 7, Podoll said they decided to “go in a different direction” and discovered on August 13 that Borgwardt’s name had been “running”.

“This was something we didn’t expect,” Podoll said, adding that authorities found evidence that Borgwardt had a life insurance policy and was communicating with a woman from Uzbekistan.

Ryan Borgwardt was first reported missing in Green Lake

Borgwardt’s wife had previously told authorities that she received a text message from him on the night of Aug. 11 stating that he was heading toward the shore and his last known location was Green Lake.

Deputies found Borgwardt’s vehicle and trailer parked at Dodge County Memorial Park at the southwest end of the lake, Podoll said. Podoll said deputies immediately deployed a boat and discovered a capsized canoe in the western part of the lake, about 70 feet deep in the water.

Bruce’s Legacy, a nonprofit search and rescue organization, and multiple law enforcement agencies searched the area “extensively” and found a fishing rod identified by his wife as belonging to Borgwardt, Podoll said. Authorities also found a tackle box containing Borgwardt’s wallet, keys and license.

Podoll recalled Keith Cormican starting on October 4th. Bruce’s Legacy in 2013 − told him that he had searched the western part of Green Lake but could not find Borgwardt’s body. But Podoll noted that Cormican was not ready to give up the search.

“So on October 7, I gathered my team together,” Podoll said. “We met, talked and said, ‘We need to go in a different direction.’ The direction we went was offline, and we learned that Borgwardt’s name had been published on August 13.”

‘We believe Ryan is alive and possibly in Eastern Europe’

The new investigation revealed that Borgwardt’s name was checked by Canadian law enforcement on August 13 and that he was in possession of a second passport after his original passport was reported lost.

With assistance from Customs and Border Patrol, Homeland Security, the FBI and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation, investigators performed digital forensic analysis on Borgwardt’s laptop, Podoll said.

“We determined that he had switched his hard drive to his laptop,” Podoll said. “He cleared the browser the day he went missing. On August 11, he synced his laptop to the cloud. He took photos of his passport.”

Podoll said authorities also found that Borgwardt received information about transferring funds to foreign banks, changed email addresses related to financial accounts on the day of his disappearance, and communicated with a woman from Uzbekistan.

In January, Borgwardt took out a $375,000 life insurance policy and purchased an airline gift card, Podoll added.

“Due to the discovery of this new evidence, we are confident that Ryan is not located in Green Lake and we have terminated all searches in Green Lake,” Podoll said. “At this time, we believe Ryan is alive and possibly in Eastern Europe.”

Podoll said authorities are in the process of examining possible charges against Borgwardt, adding, “Our investigation has many more steps to take to piece this puzzle together.”

The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office urged the public to come forward with any information about Borgwardt. Podoll also pleaded with Borgwardt.

“Ryan, if you are watching this, I ask that you contact us or your family. We know things can happen, but there is a family that wants their father back,” Podoll said.
