The suspect chasing Omaha changed his defense and was sentenced

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The man accused of leading Omaha Police on a chase through the city changed his plea and was sentenced to prison Tuesday.

Zionmarkevious Walton, 24, changed his charge to one count of Operating a Motor Vehicle to Evade Arrest and Intentional Careless Driving.

One charge of Attempted Assault on an Officer was dropped.

Walton was later sentenced to two years probation and his license was revoked for two years.

After 45 days, Walton can apply for an approved ignition interlock device and ignition interlock driving permit.

A police affidavit stated that in March, officers were called to investigate a possible shooting near Bogie’s Bar near 108th Street and Bedford Avenue around 12:15 p.m.

Omaha Police’s ABLE-1 helicopter observed a vehicle matching the description being driven recklessly and traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Officers attempted to stop the car at Interstate 80 and 96th Streets, but the driver, Walton, refused. ABLE-1 continued to follow the car eastbound.

The vehicle stopped twice to release passengers. He eventually crashed into a light pole, guardrail and stop sign. Stop sticks were eventually installed at 60th and K Streets; The car veered toward a cruiser and crashed into the driver’s side. The officer inside was not injured.

The car eventually became disabled on Harrison Street near Interstate 80. So far the only person inside was Walton. He escaped but was caught near a car dealership.

ABLE-1’s pilot claimed that he saw the man throw an object while running; officers found a gun there. Walton was found with an empty holster.
