‘Be Prepared to Leave Quickly’; Fires Are Preparing to Grow Strong in New York

Low humidity and strong winds are expected to strengthen wildfires in New York on Tuesday.

Fires have already burned 5,000 acres of Sterling Forest in Orange County, New York. Warwick Town Supervisor Jessie Dwyer calls it “the worst natural disaster the Town of Warwick has seen in many years.”

While the brief rain we’ve had in the last 24 hours has helped somewhat, Dwyer warned residents yesterday: “If things get worse, the threat to life and property could get worse.” Unfortunately, conditions are expected to worsen on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the Hudson Valley and Long Island; This means conditions are ripe for wildfires. Low humidity and strong winds are expected to increase the risk once again. That’s not good news for those fighting fires in Greenwood Lake, Warwick and other small communities in the Southern Hudson Valley.

More Evacuations Possible in the Next 24 Hours

On Sunday, residents near Cliff Road and East Shore in Greenwood Lake were asked to voluntarily evacuate as flames approached their homes. Fortunately, these areas have been protected and are “clear for now” according to officials. However, a new fire was reported on the East Shore north of Cliff Road just after 5pm last night.

The Town of Warwick is currently focusing on areas near Wah Ta Wah Park and Sylvan Park where the fire is spreading. Authorities say there is no evacuation request at this time, but things can change quickly. With the red flag warning issued on Tuesday, residents are asked to prepare for a quick evacuation.

Hudson Valley Residents Urged to Prepare to Evacuate

Authorities are urging residents to prepare important belongings for a quick exit. Residents should prepare supplies such as water and flashlights and have an emergency plan for all family members.

Those forced to flee their homes will be met at the American Legion on Mountain Lakes Lane, where the American Red Cross has prepared a shelter. When an evacuation order is given, residents will hear sirens and loudspeakers with information. First responders will also assist disabled and elderly citizens.
