Three suspected East London taxi violence killers slept, two in Mall of Africa

Three suspects linked to taxi violence-related murders in East London have been arrested by a special task force tasked with preventing, combating and investigating serious and violent crime in the Eastern Cape and Midrand.

“The murders are believed to have occurred between November 2023 and August 2024, with two taxi owners, a taxi driver and a taxi association member shot dead,” Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.

Two of the suspects were arrested at the Mall of Africa in Midrand on 8 November, while another was arrested in East London on 9 November. A video emerged on social media showing the moment law enforcement officers arrested several suspects. Two people in the mall.

The other four suspects, also seen in this video, were taken for questioning by the police.

“Police seized four pistols and an AK47 from the suspects,” Mathe said. “These firearms and rifles were subjected to ballistic testing to determine their connection to murders and other serious and violent crimes.”

This matter is still under investigation and police will have no further comment.
