When Matthew Perry After his passing, fans flooded social media with their favorite Chandler Bing moments from Friends. The man was a master of sarcasm, slapstick comedy, and the awkward, embarrassing moments we all love. However, a scene that showed Perry never being afraid to speak out was never released. There was a plan for Chandler to go to a gay bar, but Perry wasn’t going to let it slide.

Let’s go back to season 7. Friends was a pop culture machine at this point, but not everything about the show has aged well. The ’90s and early 2000s were all about “gay panic” jokes, and Friends wasn’t very good at directing them. Chandler was often the target of these jokes due to his neurotic personality; his masculinity was always open to question. What about when they want to send her to a male strip club? Yes, Perry had nothing to do with it.

Matthew didn’t think the show relied on old stereotypes to get cheap laughs. And honestly, who could blame him? This gay bar idea was so lazy, just another way to fool around Chandler’s awkwardness without any real thought. Perry saw the big picture, especially since the show isn’t known for delving into LGBTQ+ issues. So he stood up and hung up. And honestly? This was a smart move because that scene was scrapped and never aired.

“What about the One with Chandler’s Dad?” you may think. This episode came four episodes later and it was revealed that Chandler’s parents were a transgender woman played by Kathleen Turner. But again, the program handled the issue clumsily; instead of understanding the complexities of being transgender, it focused on Chandler’s discomfort with his father’s drag persona. It was more about cheap laughs than the real story.

So it’s understandable why Perry wanted to skip the gay bar story. Not only did he feel like it didn’t fit Chandler’s neurotic vibe, but he also felt like the show was about to dive into uncharted and potentially problematic waters with its LGBTQ+ representation. Of course, Chandler was being put into these situations that had no real depth. So when the gay bar scene got the axe, it was a smart move that saved the show from falling into an easy trope.

Looking back, Perry’s refusal to continue this story was pretty solid. It was a quiet stance against cheap jokes and a push towards better handling of LGBTQ+ themes on TV. During Friends While it’s not the most progressive show when it comes to queer culture, Perry stepping back helped keep things from veering into even darker waters.

In the end, Chandler remained the weird, neurotic guy we all loved, and that gay bar scene never saw the light of day. Perry maintained the integrity of her character and, in doing so, kept Friends from falling into old stereotypes. So while Chandler will always be remembered for his one-liners, this behind-the-scenes move is yet another reason to be thankful for Perry’s impact on the show.
