A 17-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car on the M5 motorway in Somerset.

Avon and Somerset Police said the teenager died at the scene following the collision at around 11pm on Monday.

The M5 is closed in both directions between junctions 24 at Bridgwater and 25 at Taunton and is expected to remain closed for some time until police carry out investigations.

Police said the victim’s relatives were informed and supported by a specially trained police officer.

No one else was injured in the incident.

A mandatory referral was also made to the Independent Police Conduct Office due to prior police contact.
