7-year-old boy killed in hit-and-run crash on Detroit’s east side

A 7-year-old boy is dead and his 5-year-old sister is in critical condition after a hit-and-run crash on Detroit’s east side over the weekend, police said.

Detroit Deputy Police Chief Franklin Hayes said officers were called to the intersection of East Seven Mile and Mound roads around 4:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of a crash involving three vehicles.

According to a preliminary investigation, one of the vehicles ignored a red light and crashed into two other vehicles, Hayes said at a news conference near the intersection on Saturday.

He said two children were also in one of those vehicles. According to authorities, there were three adults in the same vehicle. The adults and the driver of the second vehicle suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Police reported that the driver fled the scene after the accident. The 25-year-old suspect returned to the crash scene about two hours later and surrendered to police, Hayes said. The deputy chief also said the suspect is not a Detroit resident.

The deputy chief said investigators determined alcohol was a factor in the crash. He said a breathalyzer test showed the man’s blood alcohol level was in the double digits.

Hayes said the crash had a visible impact on the officers who responded to the crash.

“Our officers are people too,” he said. “And when I arrived on the scene, I saw this.”

Nine people died on Michigan roadways between the week of Oct. 28 and last week, bringing the total of traffic fatalities this year to 874, according to Michigan State Police.

Additionally, 134 more people have been seriously injured so far this year, for a total of 4,800 people statewide.

There were 22 fewer deaths and 110 fewer serious injuries compared to the same period last year, according to state police statistics.
