A former kickboxer has been charged with murdering his partner after multiple stab wounds were found on his body in a Penrith hotel room.

On Tuesday officers from Strike Force Marree charged Darren John Berry, 53, with one count of murder after the body of Shirley So was found at the Pullman Hotel on Sunday.

Berry, who fought under the name “Hacksaw”, was found with cuts on his arms in the same room with 50-year-old So. He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but later recovered.

The hotel is located in the Panthers Leagues Club area.

NSW Police successfully applied to Penrith Local Court on Monday for an interim order to carry out forensic procedures against Berry, who was later charged.

Berry did not apply for bail at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday, where he appeared via video link from his hospital bed. He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.
