Dan Campbell provides injury update on two key starters for Lions’ offense

ALLEN PARK — Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave an update on injuries to two key offensive linemen in a statement to the media on Monday.

All-Pro tight end Sam LaPorta, who caught a season-high 66 passing yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 26-23 comeback victory over the Houston Texans, suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder.

Starting left tackle Taylor Decker, also recovering from a shoulder injury, missed Sunday’s game, leaving Dan Skipper to fill in at left tackle while Penei Sewell remained at right tackle.

“It’s going to be day by day, but we don’t think it’s like, ‘Oh my God, this is going to be a long, nagging injury,'” Campbell said of LaPorta. “I think we’ll get through this. I’m hopeful this week, but I wouldn’t say it’s doubtful.”

Campbell added this about Decker: “Decker is questionable, but he’s on the right track.”

In the past, Campbell would often move Sewell to the left when Decker was out of the game. However, this time he opted to keep Sewell on the right side and explained the reasoning behind the decision.

“When Decker had his injury and we felt like there was a possibility he wouldn’t be able to play, we felt like the hay was already in the barn,” Campbell said. “So let’s leave Sewell on the right (tackle). He received his representatives here. I mean, we’re in most Thursdays and we’re running, we’re on pads, we’re on live replays, we’re moving.

“And that’s where he got his reps, and then Skipper moved in at left tackle and that’s where he got his reps,” Campbell continued. So let’s not change this transition to ‘Okay, Skip, I know there are repeats there, go right.’ Sewell, just the opposite.’”

“We thought it would be better to do that. And it worked – it just worked. There were a lot of plays that went Sewell’s way and the rest was up to him. I mean, he made some incredible blocks.”
