A cruise ship rescued four people from a disabled catamaran carrying water hundreds of kilometers off the coast of Bermuda, authorities said.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A cruise ship rescued four people Sunday from a disabled catamaran that was taking on water hundreds of miles (kilometers) off the coast of Bermuda, authorities said.

U.S. Coast Guard Region 5 spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class Petty Officer 3rd Class While the 50-foot disabled catamaran Serenity was approximately 265 miles (426 kilometers) off the coast of Bermuda, the gasket on the escape hatch burst, causing the ship to take on water. Christine Bills said in an email. The Coast Guard issued a broadcast requesting assistance from the nearest ship, and Disney Treasure, which was about 80 miles (129 kilometers) from Serenity, responded and launched a lifeboat to rescue the four passengers.

Bills said a team from Elizabeth City Coast Guard Air Station in North Carolina launched the HC-130 to fly over the scene until the rescue was completed. Coast Guard video at the scene shows the yellow lifeboat moving from the cruise ship towards the disabled catamaran.

In a statement from Disney Cruise Line, it was stated that Disney Treasure was heading to its new home in Port Canaveral, Florida, from Eemshaven, the Netherlands, while responding to the ship in danger. Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara said they were pleased to be able to help passengers in danger.

“Our crew members worked together in the rescue and expertly demonstrated their training and commitment to safety,” Nogara said.
