    Our loved ones remember Mackenzie Michalski; Investigation into his death continues

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Friends and family both here and abroad are remembering the life of Fredonia native Mackenzie Michalski as the investigation into her death continues in Hungary.

    Michalski is a 31-year-old nurse practitioner. He was killed while on holiday in Budapest last week.

    The 37-year-old Irish citizen was arrested and detained after confessing to killing Michalski in the flat he rented in Budapest. The suspect then led authorities to where he hid her body outside a Hungarian village about two hours southwest of Budapest.

    A statement was released last week on behalf of Michalski’s loved ones, saying in part: “Kenzie will forever be remembered as a beautiful and caring young woman who dedicated herself to caring for others and making the world a better place.”

    Mourners gathered in Fredonia and Budapest on Saturday to honor and remember Michalski.

    “Sometimes people need to be around other people who are grieving to be allowed to feel their emotions,” said Melissa Pietrkiewicz, a friend of Michalski’s parents. Who organized the vigil at Barker Commons in Fredonia?.

    Mackenzie’s father, Jim Michalski, told The Associated Press at a candlelight vigil in Budapest on Saturday that he was still overcome with emotion, adding: “I’m still trying to hold on to what happened…it will never happen.”

    Michalski’s parents traveled to Budapest shortly after the girl was reported missing, but learned along the way that their daughter had been killed, the Associated Press reported.

    Police used security cameras to identify the suspect, who authorities said met Michalski at a nightclub.

    According to multiple reports in Hungary, the Budapest court decided to keep the suspect in custody while the investigation continues.
