Packers want to ‘chase perfection’ on offense

GREEN BAY – The Packers know exactly what’s holding them back offensively.

Penalties, dropped passes and interceptions all contributed to Green Bay ranking ninth in the league in points per game (25.6), but failed to top its third overall ranking in yards per contest (390.6).

Coming off a bye week after a chance to rest and reset, the Packers are focusing on uncovering their talents, not their mistakes.

“We were pretty good as a unit, and it’s crazy because we could have been so much better,” running back Josh Jacobs said Monday after the team’s farewell practice.

“That’s the fun part of the back part of the season, trying to chase excellence, trying to chase being great as a team and trying to come in every day and lock in.”

Jacobs certainly likes the running game, but he believes there’s more there, too. He ranks fourth in the league with 762 yards passing through nine games, and the depth behind him could improve with rookie MarShawn Lloyd likely coming off injured reserve this week.

Jacobs was dealing with a minor ankle injury before the bye, but the break helped with that as well as the workhorse’s typical midseason “heavy” legs. Once he’s balanced, he feels as good as he’s ever felt, and there’s a “second spark” from others.

Health will definitely impact the Packers’ offensive prospects from here on out. Point guard Jordan Love (groin) and center Josh Myers (ankle) are among those dealing with injuries, and Myers said he’s in better shape but needs to get a feel for where he’s at in practice. (Love is expected to speak to the media on Wednesday.)

Like Jacobs, Myers understands the issues holding the team back but sees more potential than problems with the offense as a whole.

“I think we’ve had a pretty balanced attack in the first half of the season and if we can continue that, play good complementary football and stay in front of the sticks, I think the sky’s the limit for our attack and our attacking team,” he said. “I think we have the talent to be the best offense in football.”

Myers added that it takes “intentional focus every day” to stay on the details and little things that can make or break any performance.

The Packers are among the most explosive offenses in the league, with 32 passing plays of 20-plus yards (only three teams have 33-plus passing plays) and 11 running plays of 20-plus yards (only one team has 12-plus yards).

But the cuts and starts the offense has struggled with, coupled with the inability to convert some of those explosive gains into points, leave a lot to push for.

“I talk to the kids about this all the time, a lot of things are our responsibility,” Jacobs said. “You see a lot of the big plays we had, and we can do a lot more. We had some downs. We had some MAs (missed assignments) and things like that.

“I challenged the whole offense, I challenged the whole team to come up with a complete game. See what it feels like, see what it looks like. Try to push a little harder, give it a little more and see where we are. In the end.”

But receiver Jayden Reed said it again comes down to “not beating ourselves.” “I think that’s the key to playing the full game, to being who we can truly be.”

The Packers went through a similar process last year, with a young offense trying to fix a lot of rough spots before breaking out.

The difference was that the team didn’t have much to show for it at 3-6 in their first campaign and without the top 10 ranking the current 6-3 club has. However, experience can be leveraged by considering a similar peak performance.

“This year is different, so we have a different mentality and we have to finish the race even stronger than last year,” Reed said.

Jacobs added: “I feel like this back end of the season is where you kind of separate yourself from the rest. Teams start to take shape, you start to know and expect certain things from the players and you start to improve. I think that’s where we’re going with a bye week right now, so it’s going to be fun.” .”
