Lawyers filed a lawsuit for the 17-year-old boy accused of killing his mother

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – The attorney for the Polk County teenager accused of killing his mother made multiple requests in the case.

Collin Griffith has been charged with First Degree Murder and will be charged as an adult in the death of his mother on September 11, 2024. Deputies said the teenager had a fight with his mother and called 911 for help. He claimed that during this argument, his mother attacked him with a knife and fell on him, resulting in a deep knife wound on his neck.

Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the Auburndale home with emergency medical services, and Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responded. When they arrived at the scene, it was determined that the woman was dead.

Deputies asked the teen what happened, and he immediately became uncooperative and asked to speak with an attorney. As the investigation continued, detectives began to notice inconsistencies between what he said during the 911 call and what was discovered at the scene.

Further details revealed that Griffith was also arrested in the shooting death of his father in Oklahoma in February 2023. The teenager was arrested and charged in connection with this incident, but the charges were later dropped citing self-defense.

He was also charged in a domestic violence case against his mother by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in November 2023. Detectives spoke with witnesses who said they had previously seen the teen and his mother arguing verbally outside the home. They witnessed him grabbing his mother by her hair and dragging her home.

According to these witnesses, his mother repeatedly begged him to “let me go.”

Griffith’s lawyers have now applied to restrict information about his father’s death. They also sought bail in the case.

A status hearing will be held on November 21. Griffith will appear in court on January 21, 2025 for a decision on the requests.
