Canton field hockey advances to Division 2 semifinals

The Canton field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in overtime in last year’s Division II quarterfinals. The Bulldogs, seeded fifth in Round 8 this season, left little to chance.

Canton (19-2), which beat No. 13 Hopkinton 6-1 on Sunday night, advances to a state semifinal against top-seeded Norwood on Tuesday at Bridgewater-Raynham (7 p.m.).

“These girls have worked hard since August and most throughout the year,” Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor said. “Seeing how hard they worked to get to this point, I’m so happy for them.

“This means a lot to us as coaches, but it also means a lot to them. These seniors are great kids, great teammates, and this is a good win for them.”

Hopkinton’s defense settled in after Canton’s Cassidy Lyons scored less than two minutes into the game. Filling the rim and playing with energy, the Hillers (11-8-2) stopped eight straight Canton cornerbacks before halftime.

But less than 20 seconds into the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored again on a goal from junior captain Carolyn Schiavo.

From there it was the Shannon Lane show. The sophomore sharpshooter tallied three goals — one in the third, two in the fourth — to give the Bulldogs a comfortable lead. Schiavo added another goal.

Canton achieved 14 corners in total and only allowed three. Hopkinton’s first corner and only goal came off the stick of Mary Finnegan with seven minutes left.

“We came out here and played as a team,” Schiavo said. “We are all so close, we all really wanted this. We do that for the seniors and for (O’Connor) and (assistant coach Kelly McGowan). “Shannon and I have been trained by them since we were little kids, so it means a lot to finally get what we want and come here.”

“The win really meant a lot to us since we lost in this game last year. Now that we’ve won, it means a lot,” added Lane.

Division 2 State

Somerset Berkley 2, Longmeadow 0 — Sophomore Julie Pacheco struck first with assists from Addie Finlaw and Ryan Crook, and sophomore Kenzie Heroux scored with an unassisted score to lift the second-seeded Raiders (17-2) to a quarterfinal victory. Senior Sophia Valcourt handled the closure.

Division 3 State

North Reading 3, Chicopee 0 — In the second half, the No. 6 Hornets (18-0-2) scored three goals in the final 21 minutes to earn their second-round victory.

Finn Rodger started the scoring by curling a right-footed finish to the far side, then Max Gulino provided a fantastic chip to the onrushing goalkeeper with less than 10 minutes to play.

Kieran Miller made it a third with less than five minutes left in the game, capitalizing on the ball spilling into the box from the free kick. Cam Parrett won the shutout for North Reading.
