NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison dies at 86

NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison, auto racing organization, dies at 86 announced Saturday.

According to NASCAR, Allison died peacefully at his home in Mooresville, North Carolina. No cause of death was stated.

One of the founding members of NASCAR “Alabama GangAllison ranks fourth on the all-time wins list with 85 race wins.

Last month, Allison was recognized for his 85th victory, according to the auto racing body, when NASCAR officials awarded him the win in a controversial 1971 race at Bowman Gray Stadium.

He would later win the 1983 NASCAR championship and the Daytona 500 three times.

“Bobby Allison personified the term ‘racer.’ While he is known as one of the winningest drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history, his impact on the sport extends far beyond the record books,” said NASCAR President and CEO Jim France in a statement.

“As a driver, he won races and championships in multiple NASCAR divisions. But as the leader of the infamous “Alabama Gang,” Bobby forged a deep bond with his fans. He gave his all to our sport in the ways that mattered most. On behalf of the France family and all of NASCAR, Bobby is grateful for the loss of a NASCAR great.” “I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans.”

In 2011, Allison was inducted into NASCAR’s second Hall of Fame class.
