eThekwini urges residents to calm down ahead of storm

Officials say estimates describe the impact as life-threatening and potentially catastrophic.

The South African Weather Service has issued a level 4 severe warning for the state.

eThekwini says the weather in KwaZulu-Natal is likely to intensify between 3pm and 11pm on Sunday.

Authorities have urged residents of Durban and surrounding areas to take extra precautions.

The warning covers the CBD, Berea, Glenmore, Morningside, Umbilo, Chatsworth, Pinetown, Queensburgh, Amanzimtoti and uMlazi areas.

The city says the storm could bring torrential rains, severe lightning, large hail and strong winds of up to 70 mph.

People were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during the storm.

Municipal officials also warned of flooding.

eThekwini said that in case of emergency, residents and motorists can contact the council on 031 361 0000.
