HAWTHORN WOODS, Ill. (WLS) — Investigators are trying to find out what caused a fire that destroyed a large home in the northwest suburbs on Saturday.

The lack of fire hydrants in the area caused problems experienced by firefighters in Hawthorn Woods.

When firefighters arrived, the flames had already spread to the roof of the house. The house near Rosewood Drive and Orchard Lane was completely engulfed in flames.

“Due to the complexity and size of the fire and the lack of water, the fire went to a third alarm and sent resources here,” Lake Zurich Fire Department Chief David Pilgard said.

Since there were no fire hydrants in the neighborhood, firefighters had to bring water with them. More than a dozen large fire trucks descended on the neighborhood. This gave time to firefighting efforts.

They attacked from various angles to control the fire in the house where it started, but it took firefighters several hours to completely extinguish the flames.

The house is a total loss.

Fire investigators said an electronic vehicle and charging station were found in the family’s garage. While they weren’t sure if the fire started there, they said it created extra challenges in extinguishing the fire.

But most importantly, authorities said they were able to locate all members of the family living there.

“It gets complicated really quickly with a large fire and all the resources, setting up the ladder truck, water and multiple hose lines to put out the fire,” Pilgard said.

Fire investigators continue to search for the source of this fire and Hawthorn Woods police are joining their investigation.
