Grizzlies’ Zach Edey is the Favorite for the Rookie of the Year Award

The 2024 NBA Draft was considered one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. Only four rookies are averaging ten or more points per game to start the season. Those four rookies are Zach Edey, Bub Carrington, Zaccharie Risacher and Jaylen Wells.

Alex Sarr is the next closest name with an average of less than 10 points per game. It’s only early November, so a lot can change between now and April, but there’s no clear favorite to win the Rookie of the Year Award. Let’s dive into the best rookies to this point.

Zach Edey, a 2.80-meter center and selected number nine in the 2024 NBA Draft, became the best rookie player in the NBA this year. The two-time National Player of the Year started nearly every game for the Memphis Grizzlies and looked absolutely dominant when out of foul trouble.

He averages 20.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per 36 minutes. If Edey can manage to stay out of foul trouble, he could legitimately average that per 36 minutes. His combination of elite size, touch and footwork is very difficult for opposing teams. It also helps that he is paired with an elite point guard in Ja Morant.

The Washington Wizards have a very exciting young core heading into the 2024 NBA Draft, headlined by Alex Sarr. What if I told you Sarr wasn’t even the best rookie this year so far? Bub Carrington, the 14th pick in the draft, has looked really impressive for the Wizards this season.

So far he has averaged 10.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He showed the ability to shoot hard from the perimeter, good playmaking moves and the ability to play with great tempo. Carrington doesn’t put a lot of pressure on the basket, but he still finds ways to score consistently with his ability to take tough shots and create for others.

The number one pick in the 2024 NBA Draft was a top-three rookie early in the season, which is a positive sign for him and the Atlanta Hawks. He stands 6 feet tall and has shown off his versatile shooting ability. Risacher can catch, dribble and shoot with movement.

There was good evidence that he was a top-five shooter in his draft class. His spacing ability next to Trae Young is a great fit and he proved it in a game where he made six 3-pointers. He’s also a versatile defender and displays legit 3-and-D potential. If the rookie continues to be productive, he will have a chance to win the Rookie of the Year Award.
