Swift water killed father and son near Haskell, bodies recovered

The bodies of the father and son, who were swept away by fast-flowing waters near Haskell last night, were recovered.

Muskogee County Emergency Management has not released the identities of the victims, but they say one body was found where the father and son were dragged to Coal Creek, about 100 yards south of Bunch Road, and the other body walked away. About a half mile down Coal Creek.

“The search area was relatively small due to the scenario played out with flowing water,” Muskogee County Emergency Management Director Jeff Smith said.

It all started last night when a girl crossing a low water crossing on Bunch Road was swept away by swift waters.

Muskogee County Emergency Management told me the girl’s brother went to get her, then the father went to get his son, and they were all swept away.

“His father and brother lifted him up on a log in the water. He got out, called 911, and that’s when we responded,” Smith said.

Smith said they and other agencies worked throughout the night to search for the father and son, but incoming rain made it dangerous for responders and they had to postpone the search until this morning.

“We located our first victim a little after 7:30, at which time we notified the coroner’s office,” Smith said.

They found the second victim about 30 minutes later, Smith said.

Smith reminded people not to drive through flooded roads, saying it takes less than six inches of water to knock a person off their feet, and last night the water was much higher than that.
