PGA Tour finds ‘serious misconduct’ in disqualification of pros from Cabo event

This probably wasn’t the homecoming Emilio Gonzalez had dreamed of.

Gonzalez, 27, of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, missed the rounds by two shots, 73-71, at the Worldwide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, Mexico, on Friday. But the situation got worse for Gonzalez, who was later disqualified for violating Rule 18.3, also known as the provisional ball rule.

According to a Golf Summary reportPlaying alongside opponents Alejandro Tosti and Andrew Walker, Gonzalez hit his tee shot into the desert area on El Cardonal’s par-4 15th hole before hitting a provisional drive. After a brief search, a ball was located, but despite being within 3 minutes, Gonzales did not make a “reasonable effort” to identify the ball and continued to fiddle with his provisional ball, eventually bogeying, according to the PGA Tour.

The rules provide for: If the provisional ball has not become the ball in play and a ball is found that may be the original ball, the player must use all reasonable efforts to identify that ball. If the player fails to do so, the Committee may disqualify the player in accordance with Rule 1.2a if they consider this to be serious misconduct contrary to the spirit of the game.

He played in St. Louis before turning pro in 2020. Gonzalez, who played college golf at St. Mary’s, spent last season logging 25 events on the Korn Ferry Tour. It was his second career PGA Tour start after this year’s Houston Open, where he tied for 74th. He qualified for the final stage of the PGA Tour Q-School in December.
