For Business Insider member Amanda Yen, her grandparents Vacation home in South Lake Tahoe It is “legend material”.

It was here that her parents fell in love, spent winters learning to ski, and always dreamed of getting married.

But the annual tax measure proposed in a vote last Tuesday was rejected by local residents, leaving his family questioning whether they should keep their home. Measure N would have made it much more costly to maintain the cabin his grandparents bought in 1984 for $113,000. He suggested vacation hosts pay $3,000 in 2026 and $6,000 each year thereafter to benefit the local economy.

After the measure failed to pass on Tuesday, I spoke with Amanda to find out where the situation was.

What was the initial reaction of second homeowners after Lake Tahoe locals voted against Measure N?

The biggest feeling among second home owners in Lake Tahoe is relief. Still, the issues raised by tax supporters—like reduced education funding and out-of-control home prices—are urgent. Year-round and seasonal residents need to put their heads together to fix this.

Now that this measure has been voted down, what are you hearing from locals who support and oppose the tax?

I spoke with Amelia Richmond, one of the architects of the tax, shortly after it failed on the ballot. The message he gave was very similar to this atmosphere: Kamala Harris’ concession speech He faces defeat but is not defeated and looks forward to working with the opposition on future affordable housing policy solutions.

Local opponents were jubilant, but they were also ready to come to the table and work on a new solution with tax supporters. As Steve Teshara, one of the opposition leaders, put it: “We celebrate tonight and go back to work tomorrow.”

Cruises are all the rage this year, but flashy mega ships aren’t for everyone. Enter: luxury river cruise. A writer traveled for nine days in Vietnam and Cambodia on Scenic Spirit.

Her nine-day journey was sweetened further with a larger-than-expected room, complete with a butler, walk-in closet and opening balcony.

Despite its name, there’s a lot more food at a steakhouse than just steak. For a trained chef and food writer, crab cakes, fresh oysters, and fries are often must-order dishes.

Still, some dishes aren’t worth the splurge. She suggests skipping the chicken breast and wedge salads. And unless you’re in New England, don’t even bother with the clam chowder.

This ain’t it – steakhouse edition.
