Officers broke glass door to recover money from 103-year-old woman’s room

BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Michigan. (WILX/Gray News) – A 103-year-old woman had an unexpected encounter with wildlife in Michigan on Monday night.

On Nov. 4, officers with the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety responded to the assisted living facility Arbor North Living around 7:25 p.m.

Facility staff reported that a deer, specifically a moose, had entered one of the residents’ rooms.

Staff were unable to enter the room and could not tell if the elderly resident was injured because he was out of sight.

However, staff reported that blood seen throughout the room suggested the deer was attempting to escape.

Two police officers arrived at the assisted living facility and attempted to enter the room through the hallway door. From there, they spotted the deer near the glass patio door in the apartment’s living room.

Officers then moved toward the glass doors where they could view the deer, but found the doors locked, preventing them from helping the residents.

Officers decided to break down the glass patio door with flashlights and batons to reach the residents.

After the window was broken, officers jumped into the house for safety, allowing the deer to leave the apartment and escape into the wilderness.

After the money was gone, the police found the injured 103-year-old resident of the apartment.

Officers said the resident was conscious and alert and received medical attention before being taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators later determined that the money entered the apartment by jumping through the closed glass window of the bedroom while the resident was in bed.

In its efforts to escape, the deer had caused additional damage, most likely due to injuries sustained while breaking in, leaving blood all over the apartment.

Video from one of the officers’ body cameras captured the deer inside the apartment as the officer attempted to unlock the sliding glass door.

In the video, the deer can be seen running from the apartment onto the deck and into the darkness.

After making sure the resident was taken care of, officers attempted to locate the deer but were unable to find it after it fled into nearby woods.
