Tuscaloosa and Mercedes leaders cut the ribbon on new fire station

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – Tuscaloosa city leaders cut the ribbon on a new fire station Friday, drawing strong support from Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey.

The new fire station is located on the edge of the Mercedes-Benz factory site and includes three fire trucks, all new.

Station 11 is a little different than most fire stations in Tuscaloosa; It is equipped to intervene in possible fires that may occur in the battery factory at Mercedes.

Total cost? More than $15 million. $10 million came from the state.

“I can’t give enough credit to Governor Ivey and her economic development team for being with us throughout this process and then the work of Mercedes, the work that Mercedes has done to make sure this project goes forward,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox.

“We truly appreciate this achievement, which is very important not only to protect our operations, but also to protect life and our people,” said Frederico Kochlowski, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz.

$10 million from the state covered the cost of construction, fire trucks and equipment.
