Family seeks help as son hit by car recovers at UK Hospital

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Rico Morton closes his family-owned Nuwine barbershop, as he does every Friday at 5 a.m. in Frankfort. This time someone important is missing.

“It was good because he always helped me keep company.”

Morton’s 18-year-old son, Donyell Morton, is fighting for his life in England Hospital. Morton said around noon on Oct. 17, Donyell’s car left the roadway just off the Midway Exit on Interstate 60.

“He went to sign for help and got hit by a car,” Morton said. “At a certain point we didn’t know if he was going to make it or if he would still be here with us.”

The Woodford County graduate just got out of the intensive care unit earlier this week.

“His spleen was removed, both lungs collapsed. He had a damaged artery in his neck. “He had a broken collarbone, a broken tibula, a broken ankle.”

Doctors told the Mortons that their son likely would not survive his injuries. They say they know Donyell is a fighter. And Rico spoke to Donyell three days ago for the first time since the accident. A moment he will never forget.

“We are very happy. The best way to describe it is extreme joy. Doctors say it’s a miracle.”

The Mortons will spend a long time in the hospital and will receive even more physical therapy in their future. GoFundMe raising whatever money they can to help with medical bills.

“He’s a tough guy. “Doctors say he’s a tank.”

And now he is one of the survivors.
