1 person dead in mobile home fire in Oakhurst, deputies say

OAKHURST, Calif. (KFSN) — One person died after flames broke out at a mobile home park in Madera County on Friday.

The fire started at Whispering Pines Mobile Home Park in Oakhurst around 4 p.m.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office has not yet identified the deceased, but neighbors said a woman lived in the home.

Local resident Linda Hall said she was enjoying a quiet afternoon until smoke and screams filled the air.

“I looked outside and saw smoke coming from the first trailer on this side in the back, and I yelled at my husband and said, ‘Honey, there’s a fire!’ “I grabbed my phone and he ran out because we knew there was a lady there,” Hall said.

“He went in there and broke a window in the back, thought he could get in but it was too overwhelming.”

Hail says he has worked as a firefighter for more than seven years but has never seen a mobile home fire.

He was shocked by the rapid spread of flames.

The person in the house was worried about other neighbors and their home.

“There was a lot of noise and bombs. I don’t know what it was,” Hall recalled.

“It was actually scary.”

Two mobile homes were destroyed and the walls of a third were consumed by flames.

Hail’s husband tried to save his neighbor who died in the fire, but failed.

She says her husband was able to rescue two cats and a dog from other homes.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, but they are warning people to take precautions as temperatures drop overnight in the mountains.

“We’re asking people to be careful, be careful with what you’re doing and check your furnaces, check your fireplaces. It’s getting colder, but we’re still in the transition phase,” said CAL FIRE Battalion Chief Jacob Ching.

The Red Cross is assisting people in two other homes displaced by the fire.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release information about its portion of the investigation on Saturday.
