Jessamine Co. Homeless Coalition opens its doors in freezing temperatures

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — This week saw the potential for rain, dense fog and even snow showers across central Kentucky.

When temperatures drop below freezing, the Jessamine County Homeless Coalition opens its doors to anyone needing a warm place to stay and goes into “weather plan mode.”

The organization’s founder, Johnny Templin, says that when the temperature drops below freezing, anyone can stop by to eat, keep a roof over their head or stay warm.

“So, you know, from my perspective of faith, it’s very clear that this is what God wants us to do,” Templin said.

They can stay in freezing temperatures for as long as they need. Contrary to traditional rules that say members must show that they are trying to stand on their own two feet.

“It looks a little different. We’ve got to take a few precautions; they might not be able to get a bed in the back, but we’ll make room for them,” Templin said. “They really appreciate the opportunity.”

A maximum of 50 people can stay in the coalition. They currently receive an average of 14 visitors.

“This is about the weather emergency; “It’s about coming here and letting them warm up,” he added.

Templin has been doing this for almost a decade. Giving back to her neighborhood is so important to her that her organization will be giving away 750 meals at the Jessamine County Public Library on Nov. 27.
