Amsterdam temporarily bans protests after anti-Semitic attack on Israeli football fans

On Friday, the city of Amsterdam banned protests for three days after dozens of Israeli football fans were injured during anti-Semitic protests. demonstrations Thursday, after a football match between Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv and Netherlands’ Ajax.

According to local police, approximately 20 to 30 Israeli football fans suffered minor injuries in anti-Semitic attacks throughout the night, and five more football fans were released from hospital with serious injuries on Friday. A total of 63 demonstrators were arrested in connection with the events, 10 of whom remain in detention. According to CNN.

Demonstrators were carrying Palestinian flags and shouting “Free Palestine”. based on to the Times of Israel. The Israeli Foreign Ministry called on Israeli citizens not to leave their hotels in Amsterdam on Thursday night, while Israel’s national security council also urged Israelis not to display any Israeli or Jewish symbols.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said on Friday that the attackers traveled around the city on scooters looking for Israeli supporters. He said the ban on protests will continue until Sunday and police presence will be increased.

“This is a terrible moment for our city… I am deeply ashamed of the behavior shown last night,” the mayor said.

Halsema also banned “clothing that covers the face” and “carrying objects” that could cause unrest.

Amsterdam police said the attacks occurred on Thursday and ahead of Thursday’s match, despite an increased police presence in the city center due to rising tensions on Wednesday.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof criticized the unrest on Friday and said the attacks were “terrible”.

“There are always problems at football matches, and football matches involving the Israeli team also attract special attention from the police, but what happened last night is horrific,” Schoof told reporters. “This is completely unacceptable. I am in close contact with all parties involved and spoke by phone with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu to emphasize that the perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted.”
