Truthout is Preparing to Meet Trump’s Agenda with Resistance at Every Point

If you’re feeling anger, despair, confusion, and deep fear today, you’re not alone. We feel this too. We have heart disease. As we confront Trump’s fascist agenda, we worry desperately about the most vulnerable among us, including our loved ones and everyone around us. Truth The community and our minds are working at a million miles a minute to map out everything that needs to be done.

We must give ourselves room to suffer and feel our fear and anger, and we must keep at the forefront of our minds the fact that millions of real human lives are at risk. And at the same time we must begin to work, evaluate our resources and prepare ourselves to throw ourselves into action with full force.

Journalism is the cornerstone of this movement. Even though we are stunned, we muster all the energy we can to face the future because we know that one of the sharpest weapons against fascism is to publish the facts.

There are many terrible issues on Trump’s agenda, and we plan to dedicate ourselves to reporting on each one in detail and, most importantly, covering the movements that resist them. We also recognize that Trump is a serious threat to journalism itself and that we must take this seriously from the very beginning.

Last week, the four of us sat down to have difficult but necessary conversations about this issue. Truth Under Trump’s presidency. How can we protect our publication from far-right lawsuits trying to bankrupt us? How can we keep our reporters safe if they have to cover political violence or are targeted by authorities? How do we urgently produce the practical analysis, tools and scope of action you need now? Will we transcend our normal routines to meet a terrifying moment in a way that best serves you?

It will be a challenging and scary four years producing social justice-focused journalism. We need to deliver news, strategy, liberating ideas, tools, and solutions that drive action more powerfully than ever before. And at the same time we desperately need to preserve our ability to do so.

We know this is a very painful moment, and donations may understandably be the last thing on your mind. But we need to ask for your new and urgently needed support.

We promise to shift into even higher gear to bring you accurate news that counters disinformation, harsh criticism, hatred and violence. We pledge to publish analyzes over the next four years that will serve the needs of the movements we all rely on to survive and even build for the future. We promise to be responsive and recognize you as members of our community who have a vital part and say in this work.
