New York City Fire Conditions

In addition to smoke from the New Jersey fires, fire conditions were also present in New York City.

“Any fire that develops will grow and spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” the NWS red flag warning for the area said. “A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are expected or occurring. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels will create a significantly higher fire growth potential.”

The warning area covers the Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island, as well as other parts of the Empire State.

A red flag warning for New York City remains in effect until Saturday night. During the day, northwest winds may blow as high as 35 mph and relative humidity may remain as low as 25 percent, according to the warning.

Where Does Smoke Appear?

Wildfires in New Jersey were sending up smoke that could be seen in New York City.

“Wildfires outside NYC mean you can smell smoke,” NYC Emergency Management previously wrote in X. excitement. “The overall air quality forecast for today is 48 with current conditions at 58 (Moderate). NYCEM continues to monitor any impacts to the city and updates to the forecast.”

New Jersey residents were also facing smoky conditions, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

“SMOKE ADVISORY: NJ residents can expect smoke conditions from the many large wildfires burning across the state to last several days,” the wildfire service told X. “Smoke conditions result from extremely dry conditions that allow fires to grow.” It will burn down to the duff layer of the soil.”

The wildfire agency added that smoky conditions in New Jersey could worsen Friday night and remain present “until significant amounts of rain fall on the fire areas.”
