VENTURA COUNTY, California. – Jessica Graham stands on the front porch that once greeted visitors to her family’s home on Donlon Road. Today, all that remains of the porch and her home is a pile of rubble in the wake of the Mountain Fire.

“To leave home one day to go to work and have nothing to come home to (no clothes, no furniture, no food, no water), that’s absolutely violating,” Graham said, reflecting on the shock of losing her home.

Like many others in the Ventura County community, Graham’s home was destroyed as the Mountain Fire devastated Somis. More than 20,000 acres burned and the fire destroyed at least 132 structures, mostly homes. The devastating fire was only 5% contained, prompting Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency for the region and unlock resources to help firefighters and residents.

Fire officials are working around the clock to contain the blaze, planning to continue deploying heavy helicopters throughout the night, taking advantage of cooler temperatures and reduced wind to combat the flames.

“We will be flying all our heavy helicopters again tonight,” a fire official said at a recent news conference. “As the wind dies down, we will take full advantage of the weather and lower temperatures and continue to extinguish the fire as best we can.”

At least ten people were injured in the fire, most of whom were affected by smoke. Luckily, none of these injuries are life-threatening.

Despite the devastation, Graham is grateful for the things that can’t be replaced. “We’re grateful that we got out alive and that our animals are doing well. Everything else can be replaced.” he says.
