Time is ticking for Huntsville Hospital and UHC to reach agreement

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Time is running out for Huntsville Hospital patients who are United Healthcare customers.

In October, the hospital announced it would cut ties with the insurance company if a settlement was not reached. The current contract expires in a week.

WAFF 48 News reached out to UHC and Huntsville Hospital for comment, but both declined to speak on camera about this matter.

UHC patients coming to Huntsville Hospital will be out of network after November 15.

An official from United Healthcare made the following statement regarding the current negativities:

We are in active discussions with Huntsville Hospital Health System. We remain committed to reaching an affordable agreement for Huntsville families and employers.

Huntsville Hospital announced in mid-October that they would be cutting ties with United Healthcare. All this came after months of negotiations between the two groups.

Scott Ivey, owner of Senior Benefits of North Alabama, says many of his clients are concerned about their insurance coverage. He also said that not all UHC customers would be affected.

Ivey recommends speaking with your agent or broker to find out how these downsides will affect you and what options you have for moving forward.

“We have another company and a plan that we have agreements with that they can cover Huntsville Hospital for at least December, as long as they sign up before the end of November,” Ivey said.

Ivey also says coverage may continue for people with ongoing conditions who use Huntsville Hospital as long as the problem started before UHC was disconnected.

He urges customers to talk to their broker or agent to find out how this will affect them and what their options are.
