Call on the government to recognize the genocide in Gaza at the hands of Israel

The state must show leadership and acknowledge that genocide occurred. GazaA Social Democrat TD said this.

The Dáil will hear on Thursday that Ireland must state that a genocide is taking place and will do everything it can to stop it.

“It is no use for Micheál Martin to continue making excuses, using language evasions, and using terms like genocide when it comes to terrible events.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “We are not offering the same terms on what we saw in Gaza,” Gary Gannon said.

The Social Democrats will introduce a motion in the Dáil to recognize the genocide in Gaza at the hands of the state of Israel, likely on the current government’s last sitting day.

If the motion is passed, Mr Gannon said it would give Ireland the legitimacy to take it to the EU and that Israel-EU trade deals with humanitarian provisions in them were unreasonable.

There can be no more excuses, Mr. Gannon said, as we watch “hospitals being destroyed, journalists being pointlessly targeted and women, children and men being destroyed.”

Social Democrats bring the motion after proposing it to their private members Time this week to try to advance the Occupied Territories Bill When it came to the next stage, it was not addressed by the government.

“This is something that is hugely important to the Irish people,” Mr Gannon said. “People are asking themselves what we’re doing and the idea that the Government can say they can’t even take this to the next step. I think it’s cynical.”

Mr Gannon described Transport Minister Eamon Ryan’s memo to the Cabinet on updating legislation on the transport of combat munitions in Ireland’s sovereign airspace as a cynical ploy ahead of the election.

Mr Ryan said the law, which was last amended in the 1980s, needed to be updated to ensure it was fit for purpose and strengthen the State’s ability to identify and sanction anyone found to be in breach of it.
