A witty remark by a Kenyan journalist took over social media and netizens used it to create funny posts.

Who is behind the phrase ‘Maandishi haya sio mageni’?

Award-winning journalist Pheona Kenga, who worked for Citizen TV, TV47 and Look Up TV, coined the phrase, which has since been immortalized across social media platforms.

“Maandishi haya si mageni jijini, labda kwa mgeni jijini. “Ila kwa wenyeji wa jiji, ni maandishi tulioyazoea,” he said.

This line roughly means:

“These articles are not new in the city, except for visitors. But city people are used to these.”

The journalist’s close friend, who wanted his identity to remain secret, told TUKO.co.ke Pheona’s creativity is underrated.

Kenyans used this expression to refer to scenarios in which the gullible were exploited. relationships or business deals.
