Former Miami Marlins Manager Takes New Position at American League Club

Former Miami Marlins coach Skip Schumaker has a new home in the American League West.

Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on social media:

The Rangers have hired Skip Schumaker as a senior advisor to President of Baseball Operations Chris Young, and Schumaker is expected to reach an agreement with former bench coach Miami Luis Urueta to join the Rangers coaching staff in that role.

It’s not surprising to see Schumaker, a highly respected figure in baseball, get another opportunity, but it’s a bit surprising to see him take a job off the field.

Schumaker was linked to the Cincinnati Reds’ managerial opening earlier this offseason, but that went to Terry Francona. He was also linked with opening for the Chicago White Sox, but they eventually hired Will Venable. Venable was working on the Rangers staff as the team’s assistant manager.

The Marlins went 62-100 this season, but that has more to do with bad luck and bad conditions than Schumaker. Schumaker led the Marlins to the playoffs in 2023, but significant injuries to the pitching staff devastated the roster in 2024.

marlins also saw slugger Jorge Soler leave in free agency last season and then trade Luis Arraez earlier this year. Moreover, the team sold on deadline day, making a bad situation even worse.

As a player, Schumaker spent 11 years in the major leagues with the Cardinals, Dodgers and Reds. He helped the Cardinals win the 2006 World Series and batted .278 for his lifetime. He also had a career .337 on-base percentage, hit 28 home runs, and stole 26 bases in his lifetime.

He should be back on the manager recruiting circuit next offseason.
