Former ISU therapy dog ​​dies after short illness

PEORIA, Illinois (WMBD) — Sage, the Black Labrador Pawficer who served as a therapy dog ​​at Illinois State University for five years, has died.

“After falling suddenly ill in July and spending three precious months with the Redbird family, Sage’s health suddenly declined again and he passed away on November 4, with his carer by his side.” ISU Police Department’s Facebook page.

Sage joined the ISU department in July 2019 and retired on Oct. 18, 2024, the department said.

“During his five years of service, Sage attended more than 1,000 events and positively impacted more than 71,000 lives,” the ministry said. “He inspired other police therapy dog ​​programs, earned an honorary ‘Dog award’ for Health Sciences, and was featured in campus promotions.”

“The University of Illinois Veterinary Hospital extended his life by approximately three months but was unable to cure him sufficiently to celebrate his retirement party,” the department said.
