Jones County, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) – A poll worker has been charged after a threatening letter was sent to the election supervisor in Jones County, Georgia, according to the Department of Justice.

Nicholas Wimbish, 25, was arrested Monday and charged with sending a bomb threat, giving false information about a bomb threat, sending a threatening letter and making a false statement to the FBI.

The Justice Department said Wimbish was working as a poll worker for the Jones County Elections Office on Oct. 16 and “engaged in a verbal altercation with a voter.”

“Later that evening, Wimbish conducted an online search to determine what information about himself should be made public,” the Justice Department said. release. “The next day, Wimbish sent a letter addressed to the Jones County election examiner, purportedly from a ‘Jones County voter.’”

The letter threatened violence against poll workers and ended with a handwritten note that read, “PS toy explosion at early voting site, don’t light cigars, be safe,” according to the Justice Department.

The Justice Department said Wimbish faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison if convicted.

The FBI is investigating.
