North Carolina, a battleground state with 16 electoral votes up for grabs, has been a popular campaign stop for both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of Election Day.

Scripps News hit the ground running in North Carolina on Tuesday and checked in with voters on some of their biggest priorities as they head to the polls.

“It’s pretty clear,” Sharon Leinwand said of voting for Harris. “The opposition spreads insults and negativity, and I prefer positivity.”

Another North Carolina voter Scripps News spoke with, Robert Sanguily, explained what motivated him to vote for Trump.

“I mean, the border speaks for itself,” he said. “We can’t have a sovereign nation without secure borders. That’s the measure of being a country; being able to control its population – who comes, who votes. You know, all of these decisions are important for our future.” Frankly, I think economics is a no-brainer. “I think his policies are strong and will be beneficial to our nation.”

Although Trump barely won North Carolina by fewer than 75,000 votes in 2020, he has never lost the state in a general election. The state also hasn’t sided with a Democrat since former President Barack Obama’s first campaign for the White House.

But Democrats remain confident they can turn North Carolina blue this election cycle, according to recent polling. New York Times and Siena College It shows Harris has a slight advantage among likely voters in the Tar Heel State.
